Brioche Perdue: The Gourmet French Toast

Hello everybody!

Today I am sharing with you a recipe that you all well know, especially you are living in North America: the French Toast!

So to be completely honest with you, the first time I heard about French toast I was thinking : “wait a minute that’s not French!” until I realized that we do have French toast in France except it is called differently and looks a bit different too. In France, French toast is called “pain perdu” which literally means “lost bread” and is made out of old bread. Since bread is part of our food habits it makes sense that we would invent something to save our old bread. The process is similar to the american way to do it, except that we use baguette or other fresh bread to make French toast instead of processed sliced bread. Pain perdu has never been something popular in my family so I have never tried it while living in France or even really heard about it much. However, my first encounter with French toast here in Canada was magical! It was so delicious!!!

So today, I will not share with you the traditional Pain perdu recipe but a more gourmet version of it (for the foodies like me out there!) made with brioche! If you remember, in my previous recipes, I shared with you the recipe of brioche also called sweet bread or egg bread which is so delicious with jam or nutella or even toasted and it is also used to make French toast in France. It will be a little bit sweeter and richer but it is worth making it!

Let’s start cooking!

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 +1/4 cup milk
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • A pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg

Instructions:

As you can imagine the recipe is really simple to make and if you made French toast before, then you will know the process.

1- Put your pan on medium heat and pour about a tablespoon of oil or butter in the pan.

2- In a bowl, mix the eggs with the sugar and the milk, and add the vanilla extract, the cinnamon and the nutmeg. Mix well.

3- Cut the rest of your brioche into slices and dip them into the mixture. The slices have to be entirely coated with the mixture.

4- Put the dipped slices of brioche in the pan and let them cook until each side is golden.

Serve with maple syrup and fresh berries or fruits and enjoy!
