Easy Croque-Monsieur

Hello everybody!

I think that when everybody think of French food, one of the first dishes they would think of would be croque-monsieur. That’s why today I’m sharing with you the version we make in my family, which is a much more simplistic and lighter version. Croque-monsieur is one of these things that us, French people, usually make ourselves for lunch or dinner. Back home we always made them for dinner with a salad on the side. It’s a really delicious and quick meal to make!

The regular croque monsieur is composed of a layer of ham and cheese inside 2 slices of bread topped with a thick layer of béchamel and cheese. Well the version we make at home isn’t as complicated! A lot of people simply spread butter on each side of the slices and pan fry them but in my family we use crème fraîche instead. Crème fraîche gives much more moisture to the croque-monsieur so when you pan fry them, you get that nice crispy outer layer and that moist and creamy filling. I personally think that this version is much nicer to make as you don’t need much time to prepare them and they are just as good!

Let’s start cooking!

Ingredients:

  • slices of bread
  • slices of black forest ham
  • 15% to 40 % fat crème fraîche (or sour cream if you can’t find it )
  • Grated comté

Preparation:

1- There really isn’t much preparation to do. Grate the comté, or if you can’t find this cheese, use gruyère or emmental instead.

2- Spread the cream on the slices of bread (only spread a thin layer). Add the grated cheese and a slice of ham and close the sandwiches. Spread another thin layer of cream on the top slices.

2- Heat a pan on medium heat and place the sandwiches in the pan, slices with cream on it down (there is no need to add butter or oil in the pan as the cream will melt and coat the pan with grease). Spread another layer of cream on the top slices in the pan.

Basically, each side of the slices should be coated with cream. Cook until the bottom side is crispy and nicely colored and flip the sandwiches. Once all sides are nicely colored, serve them and enjoy!

As you can see this is really easy to make! They make a perfect quick dinner and is best accompanied with a salad
