Tuna Spread

Hello everybody!

Warm days call for apéro in France and this tuna spread is perfect for it. Apéro is a time before a meal, so usually around 11 am or 6 pm, where we enjoy drinks and little appetizers or finger foods such as chips, peanuts, salami and other treats. I’m sharing with you a quick and delicious tuna spread recipe that makes a perfect appetizer whether it’s for apéro or just to entertain your friends at a party.

It’s very easy to make, flavorful and quick so you don’t need to spend hours in your kitchen! I got inspired by the Basque region again with their abondance of seafood and spices like Espelette pepper. As I mentioned before, I have a hard time finding this spice in Toronto so I replaced it with some paprika and chili powder.

I love making this spread whenever I have friends over and I love how convenient it is. This recipe calls for a couple ingredients that most of us have in our pantry and is very quick to make. Tuna goes very well with tomato which gives it a sweeter flavor and the spices really make this spread more flavorful and gives it a little kick as well.

I find that this makes a great snack too and I love to spread it on some toasted or fresh bread. This is the kind of appetizer that I love because they look fancy and like you spent time making it when really it’s so easy and fast to make. Simplicity at its best!

Let’s start cooking!

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of tuna
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp butter
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 50 ml white wine
  • Salt and pepper

Preparation:

1- Dice the half onion thinly. Heat up the oil and butter in a frying pan on medium heat. Cook the onion until it starts caramelizing and get a nice golden color.

2- Deglaze with the white wine. Let the wine reduce a bit and add the tomato paste.

3- Drain the water from the can and add the tuna in the frying pan. Mix well and add the spices and salt and pepper to taste.

4- Let the mixture cook for a couple minutes. Place the mixture in a food processor and mix until you get a thinner mixture. Let it cool down, spread on fresh bread and enjoy!

This tuna spread is so easy to make and perfect to eat with drinks when you have friends over or even as a quick snack! It’s simply perfect for summer and can be kept for several days in the fridge.
