Hello everybody!
It’s time for another spread! Last time I shared with you one of my favorite tuna spread and this time it’s sardines. I’m completely in love with these types of spread as they make a great appetizer in the summer. No cooking needed and it’s very easy to make as well. Sardines are probably one my favorite fishes because of their strong flavor, crunchy bones and soft flesh.
The advantage of sardines is that, like with canned tuna, there are so many ways to use them. This spread is a perfect example and a delicious treat! Because the sardines are mixed with other ingredients, I find that they don’t have as much of a strong taste than when you eat them by themselves, which is great for those who are not big fans of sardines.
Only a couple ingredients are needed for this spread. First of all, you will need a can of sardines, some cream cheese, lemon juice, shallots and spices. The cream cheese is what makes this spread so smooth and adds a nice amount of creaminess. The lemon juice adds the right amount of sourness to the spread and also pairs well with fatty fishes like sardines.
I added some thinly sliced shallots to add a little kick to the spread, which I think made it even more delicious! For spices, I went for something simple: salt and pepper and of course a little bit of paprika which adds a beautiful color but also a wonderful flavor. This is a great way to use canned sardines and I love that this spread only takes minutes to make. It’s so convenient when you have guests over and need to serve something quick!

Ingredients:
- 1 box of canned sardines in oil
- 2 tbsp cream cheese
- 1 tbsp chopped chives
- 1/2 lemon juice
- 1 shallot
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- Salt+pepper
Preparation:
1- Open the can of sardines and drain the oil. Add the sardines in a bowl and mash them with a fork.
2- Add in the cream cheese, the lemon juice and the chopped chives and mix well.
3- Dice the shallot thinly and add it to the mixture. Add in the paprika as well as salt and pepper to your taste.
4- Mix well and it’s ready to serve!
I love spreading it on fresh or toasted bread and top each slice with some more chopped chives and paprika. It’s very easy to make and delicious! Perfect for a fast appetizer or snack for Summer! You can keep it in a closed container for about a week.

What a fabulous idea – I cannot believe I have not had/seen this before. Brillant! I used sardines in water instead and maybe a little more cream cheese. Loved it!

Delicious! I didn’t have chives but substituted with green onion. And I used smoked paprika. Thank you!

Thank you Gabriela! Green onions work great as a substitute and I’m sure the smoked paprika added a really nice flavor to the spread. I’ll try this next time I make it!
