I’m back after a little break! The cold temperatures have been bad for me and I had a pretty bad cold so I needed some time to rest, but now back to cooking! These apple slippers or “chaussons aux pommes”, as we say in French, are a great dessert or snack which is super easy to make and perfect for the season. These little pockets of puff pastries are stuffed with applesauce and pieces of apples and are probably one of the most popular treat in France during fall season.
What I really love about them is that they are not very sweet which make them sort of a healthy snack to me. I love the combination of the crispy puff pastry with the soft and sweet apples. There are many ways to make them, but my favorite way is to add some applesauce inside for some added sweetness. I love making my own applesauce or “compote and you can actually check out the recipe here, but you can also you use a store bought one if you don’t have much time. I use to eat chaussons aux pommes when I was little so for me this is really bringing me back to my childhood whenever I eat them.
Let’s start baking!
Ingredients (for 16 slippers):
- 4 sheets of puff pastry
- 3 apples
- Applesauce (try my homemade version here)
- 1 egg for egg wash
1- Preheat the oven at 355 F. Peel and dice the apples. Reserve on the side
2- Cut each sheet of puff pastry in 4 pieces. Inside each piece, add some applesauce and pieces of apple. Clause the sides and press the edges. You should get a triangle shape at this stage. For a rounder shape, trim the edges and press all around with a fork.
3- Beat the egg and brush it over the apple slippers. Bake for 20 -30 min. Let them cool down and enjoy!
This super easy treat is a French classic and a really great snack. They are not too sweet and simply perfect for the season!
