Walnut Bredele

Hello everybody!

Long time no see! I have been very busy in December so I haven’t posted anything but I didn’t stop cooking! Every year for Christmas, I bake bredele which are traditional Alsatian Christmas cookies and I must say that I went overboard this year!

You can find the ones I always make on my blog and this year I also tried new one which I’m going to share with you today. Most bredele are made with nuts, especially almonds, but this time this one is made with walnuts which is one of my favorites.

I absolutely fell in love with this cookie because of its rich buttery flavor, its soft but crumbly texture and of course its wonderful walnut flavor. This is a very easy recipe to make and they make a wonderful treat for Christmas but would also be great anytime of the year!

Let’s start baking!

Ingredients:

  • 300 g butter
  • 125 g sugar
  • 125 g ground walnuts
  • 400 g flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • zest of half a lemon
  • 2 egg yolks for egg wash

Preparation:

1- Preheat the oven at 355 F. Let the butter at room temperature until it is soft. Add it to a mixing bowl with the sugar and vanilla and whip it until you get a smooth and creamy texture.

2- Add in the flour, ground walnuts and lemon zest and mix well. Knead the dough until smooth and non sticky.

3- Roll the dough until you get a thickness of about 1 to 2 cm and cut circles with a cookie cutter.

4- Brush each cookie with the egg wash and place a walnut halves at the center. Bake for 10 min, let them cool down and enjoy!

This is a great and easy bredele recipe perfect for Christmas but also all year round! I think they are perfect little treats to enjoy with a tea of coffee.

Awesome post with walnuts! As much as I like almonds, I probably like walnuts even more, very nutritious with ALA omega-3, too!

Thank you so much Kenta! I prefer walnuts as well compared to almonds.
